Fantasy, gothic and pop horror, with Frances Hardinge, Ben Aaronovitch, Roger Luckhurst and Grady Hendrix
What do a historian specialising in the Gothic, a pop horror author, a dark fantasy writer and an ex–Doctor Who screenwriter who blends genres have in common? More than you would think! All of them write and think from the fringes of fantasy genres, play with traditional narrative rules and craft dark, strange, decidedly ironic stories. For this round table, we are bringing together Grady Hendrix, Roger Luckhurst, Ben Aaronovitch and Frances Hardinge: four very different voices with the shared goal of breaking away from classic fantasy and rewriting it in their own way, while engaging with their readers and the classics of the genre. From satanic rituals in the suburbs of the United States to the magical streets of London, as well as haunted houses that can breathe and Gothic archives of popular culture, their books offer a sort of ambitious narrative play that makes them must-reads. Sergi Viciana, an expert in the field, will invite them to talk about their unique perspectives on fantasy and how they have become the eccentric, intelligent voices of the fantasy genre.
