Residents, initiatives and urban activists reflect on the architectural, aesthetic and social qualities of Metropoliz
This temporary exhibition is part of the Ecological Futures in Barcelona project and presents the outcomes of the pilot initiative Ecological Futures in Rome: Un’altra casa. The exhibition centres on Metropoliz, a former meat products factory that has been occupied since 2009, currently housing around 200 residents. In 2012, the MAAM (Museo dell'Altro e dell'Altrove di Metropoliz) was founded, transforming the space into a contemporary art gallery where the residents themselves became co-curators of their environment.
The artworks at MAAM have not only defined the site's distinctive aesthetic but also played a pivotal role in protecting the community from eviction. In 2023, the city of Rome officially recognised the occupation, legalising it and planning to build housing, while maintaining MAAM as part of the city's museum network.
Un’altra casa captures the moment just before the landscape is altered by cranes and bulldozers, inviting residents, initiatives, and urban activists to reflect on the architectural, aesthetic, and social significance of Metropoliz.
