Group advisor on future cities and new industries at HSBC Group, which works in 63 countries and 300 cities. Chair of Connected Places Catapult, the UK’s innovation accelerator for cities, transport, and places. He is a board member of Transport for London and chairman of the Transport for London Programme and Investment Committee, as well as a member of its Finance and Crossrail Committees. He is also a member of the UK Government Urban Recovery Task Force and Chair of the Government Smart Cities and Connected Communities External Advisory Group.

He is an Honorary Professor of Urban Policy and Innovation at University College London and Strathclyde University. He is a member of the World Economic Forum’s Global Future Council on Cities and Urbanisation, and an expert on global cities in the BBC series My Perfect City. He is the author of ten books and one hundred plus reports about cities, investment, mobility, innovation and leadership.
