Metro and bus services prevent 1.6 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions daily
These emissions are equivalent to the amount that would be produced by 1.7 million private cars travelling the same distances.
To coincide with World Car Free Day, TMB is introducing a feature to its website and app that calculates the carbon dioxide (CO₂) produced by each public transport journey, as well as the equivalent emissions produced by a private vehicle. For example, if all the journeys made on TMB’s metro and buses in 2024 had been made by private vehicle, 430,000 tonnes of CO₂ would have been generated.
Since late 2024, 25% of TMB’s fleet has consisted of zero-emission vehicles, including 46 hydrogen buses and 196 fully electric buses. In February 2025, a tender was launched for the purchase of 19 electric articulated buses (18 metres long) with overnight charging, which will arrive in 2026 to replace vehicles currently in service that are reaching the end of their operational life.
