Company de viatge de Ravi Coltrane, Chris Potter, Nicholas Payton, Eric Reed, Kurt Elling, Terell Stafford i un llarg etcètera de músics que van renovar l’escena del jazz durant els anys 80 i els 90, James Carter continua sent un dels grans saxofonistes dels darrers temps. Descobert pel trompetista Lester Bowie, Carter va debutar amb un celebrat treball el 1993, preludi d’una fecunda trajectòria amb incursions en tota mena de gèneres, inclòs el rock i el free jazz. No en va, James Carter sempre ha estat un artista inquiet, amarat de tota mena d’influències —del funk al jazz més clàssic, passant pel rock i la fusió—, que es resisteix a ser classificat en cap escola. Un bon exemple de la seva versatilitat com a artista el trobem en l’aproximació al grup amb orgue, amb el qual ha publicat treballs com ‘Out of Nowhere’ (2005), ‘Heavern on Earth’ (2009, amb John Medeski) i ‘Live in Newport’ (2019). Al Jamboree tocarà amb Gerard Gibbs i Alex White, músics amb els quals acostuma a treballar des de fa anys.
