Com molts catalans de la seva generació, Antoni Tàpies va ser un apassionat lector i aficionat als llibres. L'artista va crear en repetides ocasions sofisticats projectes de bibliòfil. Per a això, Tàpies va col·laborar amb nombrosos autors, poetes i filòsofs famosos. Tàpies estimava la cultura alemanya, però no entenia molt bé l'idioma, la qual cosa al principi va dificultar les col·laboracions més estretes. Per això, la conferència se centrarà en la col·laboració de l'artista amb el psicoanalista i escriptor alemany Alexander Mitscherlich.
