Walking tour: China in Barcelona

Chinese balloon at Barcelona's Cathedral

To mark the celebration of Chinese New Year in Barcelona (21 January) we invite you to immerse yourselves in Chinese culture without having to set foot outside Barcelona, on a walking tour to discover the Chinese history in our city.

On this tour you will discover not only the Chinese reality we can see on the city’s streets nowadays, but also the one we can’t see but which exists or existed historically. A tour devised with the aim of bringing Barcelonians into contact with a reality that is both local and little-known, since mutual knowledge helps us to question the stereotypical views we often have of Chinese groups in our city.

We start in La Rambla, recalling the history of the first wave of Chinese migration to the city, at the start of the 20th century. We will then move on to the heart of the Barri Gòtic and discover where and how the first regular businesses of the Chinese diaspora became established, and finally follow the Sant Pere Més Baix hub and Fort Pienc to discover up-close the reality of the shops and neighbourhoods with the largest Chinese populations and their impact on the city’s neighbourhoods and facilities.

Our guide

Sílvia Company Salip has a bachelor's degree in Chinese Translation and Interpretation from the UAB, and a diploma in Chinese Studies from the University of Bordeaux. She first entered the Chinese world 20 years ago, has lived in China for three and a half years and currently works as a Chinese-language tourist guide. This time she’ll be bringing you into contact with the Chinese world we have here in our own city.

This is an activity organised in collaboration with Casa Àsia and Cultruta.
