With their wide and varied repertoire, folk culture groups from across the region play a vital role in keeping traditional Catalan dances alive throughout the regions of Catalonia, Northern Catalonia and the Franja de Ponent. While some dances have sadly been lost over time, the ones you’ll see on Avinguda de la Catedral are still very much alive. These are known as “living dances”, the stars of MercèDansa, one of the newer traditions of the Mercè festival, yet already with a rich history.

Each year, you’ll discover a new dance, giving you even more reasons to admire the choreographic richness of Catalan tradition. As you may already know, this celebration has two parts: it begins at the Cathedral and continues into the afternoon at Plaça de Sant Jaume. Musical direction of the Cobla Sabadell is led by maestro Joan Gómez.
