Itinerary through Sant Gervasi: the evolution of 20th century architecture
The Barcelona of GATCPAC: A Journey Through Avant-Garde Architecture offers a tour of Sant Gervasi, allowing visitors to explore the evolution of architecture throughout the 20th century and its connection to key political, social, cultural, and artistic events in Barcelona.
From the mid-19th century onwards, the Sant Gervasi neighbourhood emerged as a prosperous area, particularly after the inauguration of the Barcelona-Sarrià railway line in 1863. This development encouraged the city’s bourgeois families to build summer residences surrounded by gardens. As the 20th century progressed, new generations of these families, mostly composed of liberal professionals such as doctors, engineers, and architects, made the area their permanent home. Among them were prominent members of GATCPAC, the Catalan group responsible for introducing modern architecture in the region, including Josep Lluís Sert and Germán Rodríguez Arias.
Many iconic modern residential projects from the 1930s, such as Casa López on Carrer Muntaner and Casa Rodríguez Arias on Via Augusta, can be found in this very area, serving as emblematic examples of the era’s architectural innovation.
