Urban development and combative movements: can we strike a balance between modern urban progress and neighbourhood identity?
This activity consists of a tour through the neighbourhood of Sants to explore its urban and industrial development as a symbol of community unity, while examining the relationship between combative movements and urban growth. Divided into three stages – past, present and future – the tour reflects on how historical memory and local struggles have shaped the neighbourhood’s identity, raising important questions about its future.
The tour revisits Sants’ industrial past as a former municipality and a key industrial hub of Spain, taking in sites such as the Parc de l’Espanya Industrial (Park of Industrial Spain) and Carrer de Sants, along with industrial spaces – factories, workshops and warehouses – and their use by the working class, from production to labour organisation. It also explores the residential setting, focusing on functional housing for workers and its impact on urban development.
Participants will observe the transformation of industrial land into other uses, along with the associated neighbourhood conflicts and adaptations. The tour will also examine the influence of key infrastructure elements, such as the metro and Sants Station, on the mobility and development of the area. Symbolic sites like Can Vies and Can Batlló illustrate how residents joined forces to resist and redefine these changes, fostering self-managed solutions for the local community.
Finally, the tour will reflect on the transformation of these spaces into public facilities, self-managed projects or neoliberal enclaves, culminating with the key question: Is it possible to strike a balance between urban progress and neighbourhood identity?
