Agròpolis

Agròpolis is a public community space promoted by Barcelona City Council for dialogue, work and action among civil society, economic stakeholders, universities and the municipal public authority, which share the common goal of collaborating to transform Barcelona’s food system through the values of food sovereignty and agroecology.

Agroecologia:

What we do

We join forces to meet the challenges of the city’s food system, from the following three spaces:

  1. A meeting space for establishing connections and improving coordination among different stakeholders and areas of work relating to sustainable food.
  2. A co-creation space for projects and initiatives related to developing an agrifood system that is working towards food sovereignty.
  3. A lobbying space for proposing, checking and influencing public policies on sustainable food.

Lines of work

An Agròpolis plenary meeting decided to link its work areas to the challenges set out in the Barcelona Sustainable Food Strategy 2030.

We chose five of the nine challenges identified to be developed by Agròpolis. They are the following:

  1. Increase the production and sale of local and organic foods and short distribution circuits.
  2. Protect and recover urban and peri-urban food production spaces.
  3. Protect and recover urban and peri-urban food production spaces.
  4. Foster a change in food culture.
  5. Balance power within the food chain, and foster fair relationships.

How can you join Agròpolis?

If you are a group, entity, business or organisation that works with sustainable food, agroecology, urban agriculture and food sovereignty in the city of Barcelona or its metropolitan region, why not join us?

Step 1: Meet five criteria

  1. Having a connection with Barcelona’s food system (regardless of your location).
  2. Sharing the aim to transform it towards a fairer, healthier, more sustainable and more sufficient model.
  3. Working within the framework of agroecology and food sovereignty.
  4. Expressing the desire to take part in Agròpolis-related spaces and processes.
  5. Representing a project, group, entity or company that is working to transform the food system (if you want to participate in the space as an individual, please contact agropolis@bcn.cat).

Step 2: Fill out the form

  • “We understand by food sovereignty the right of peoples to determine the agricultural and food policies that affect them: to have the right and access to land, natural resources, to be able to feed healthily and healthily with GM-free food, to protect and regulate domestic agricultural production and trade with the aim of achieving sustainable development and food security. It is a strategy to break with the neoliberal agricultural policies imposed by the World Trade Organization, the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund.”

Moragues-Faus, A. (2020) Sustainable Food: a manual for cities. Barcelona City Council; PEMB; AMB: Barcelona.

  • Agroecology is a science, a set of agricultural practices and a social movement. Assuming the crucial centrality of food within societies, the proposal of agroecology is to promote fair food systems based on ecological practices that are opposed to petro-industrial food systems, which work with traditional and scientific knowledge and are often articulated through forms of collective social action. These systems incorporate a project with a socio-political vision of integral transformation of food systems necessary to face the current ecological and social crisis.
