Basilio y Gimena
Habaneras – Cuba and Spain
This concert weaves together different habaneras from the repertoire of its protagonists: Basilio and Gimena, a fictional pair of troubadours who lived in Havana in the early 20th century. The songs they sing tell their story: a journey of love, sorrow, joy and disappointment, reflecting a past that still lingers in the city.
Gimena is played by Marbis Manzanet, a Cuban singer, percussionist and composer with a career in the arts spanning over thirty years and a style that encompasses genres such as bolero, son, rumba, salsa, jazz and Brazilian music, blending tradition and experimentation. Currently living in Spain, she is known for her profound expressive sensitivity.
She’s accompanied by Óscar Sánchez, a singer-songwriter and unique figure on the Cuban alternative music scene. Bringing together trova, rock, son and reggae with satirical, critical and poetic lyrics, he’s developed a provocative, performance-based and deeply expressive style. He also lives in Spain, where he continues pushing the boundaries of the singer-songwriter genre with creations that combine humour, theatre and civic engagement.
