• Food landscapes. What if we learned at a very young age where the food we eat comes from?

In order to spark an interest in local and seasonal cuisine among the younger generations, an activity designed for kids was carried out, which consisted of creating a piece of artwork about the origins of food.
Through a fun and creative activity, based on the collage technique, boys and girls from the Barcelona Metropolitan Area created a set of landscapes from the ingredients used to make different recipes. A collective imaginary, which introduced young children, in a playful, experimental and creative way, to the knowledge about our gastronomic culture, and at the same time, taught them the value of a healthy and sustainable diet.
The art work can be seen on the Sustainable Food Week social media and also on the different screens set up at the different municipal markets.
• The future of food: how to combine health and sustainability

As part of the goals of the Barcelona 2021 World Capital of Sustainable Food, and to help promote a transition towards food sustainability, combining people's health with the planet's health, the conference aims to raise awareness about the need for this transition, as well as discussing scientific data and the projects that are being carried out in this field.
The conference is on the future of food: how to combine health and sustainability. It aims to combine experience with academic knowledge, civil society and public institutions, in a reflective debate on the challenges facing us in our move towards 5S food (Salubrious, Sustainable, Safe, Social and Satisfactory), with speeches, roundtables and debates concerning diets and health, the impact of climate change on food systems, agroecology and ecological food, equity, biodiversity and food safety and their socio-economic impact. It will also discuss the subjects of food equity, the right to food and perspectives on food vulnerability, as well as the environmental impact of food and diets, food waste and the added value of local produce as being good for the planet and for strengthening local economies.
The conference will be taking place on 13 October, from 4 to 8 pm, and on 14 October, from 3 to 8:10 pm.

  • Inauguration of Sustainable Food Citizen Week. Changing the world by eating

The start off the week will be a chorus, musical, and participative. Having their say will be the real heroes of sustainable food, those involved in the food cycle: the fishermen, drivers, chefs, farmers, ranchers, market vendors. The speech will be intertwined with the large mechanical orchestra of Cabo San Roque, distributed in the form of a sound mural in front of the City Hall, along with the active participation of the public, in a collective musical creation composed especially for the occasion. A show that highlights all the participants behind the food supply network and gives them a voice.

    Food heritage and sustainability

The round table seeks to respond to the following questions. What impact will gastronomic heritage have to face as a consequence of sustainable food? Sustainability “imposes” challenges on us every day. What strategies are being pursued to achieve this adaptation? Will innovation bring us new ways of including sustainable ingredients in our diet? And, have we got ways of maintaining a healthy diet despite the changes to come? How will this need to bring about a transition to a more sustainable diet be compatible with maintaining gastronomic heritage? These are just some of the questions which the speakers in this session will be addressing.

    Taller de vaixelles comestibles
Edible crockery workshop. How can we get children to eat fruit and vegetables in a fun, and light-hearted way?

At the edible crockery workshop, children will create their own seasonal spoons, bowls and glasses using domestic technologies, with fruit and vegetables as their materials.
The aim is to offer children and parents a fun, creative activity that involves healthy food.
At the workshop, the children explore the shapes, textures, colours, aromas and tastes of the vegetables, learning concepts such as seasonal produce, location, ecology and properties of the fruit and vegetables. At the same time, the workshop fosters the introduction of these foodstuffs in their daily diets.

    recuperem el valor dels aliments
Culinary experience: recovering the value of food products

A free, best-use meal to raise people's awareness about the value of food, preventing food waste and making the best use of food. 200 menus will be served, made using recovered food and a plenty of creativity! Parc de la Barceloneta will become an amplifier for the people and projects that work towards reducing food waste, making the most of food and achieving zero waste. The recovered food is the star of the show! The other ingredient: volunteers. The kitchen will be humming thanks to a team of volunteers who make it possible to recover surplus food, cook and serve the dishes. The selection, cleaning and preparation of all the recovered food is carried out in a fun, relaxed atmosphere. Everyone is welcome! On the same day, we will also be offering recovered food that hasn't been used by the kitchen, at an “adoption stall”, as a donation and act of joint responsibility towards the value of the product.

We hereby inform you that we cannot guarantee that the meals served during this event are free of substances that may cause some type of allergy or food intolerance.

Creació i gestió d’un banc de llavors
Creation and management of a seed bank. Everyone can have their own seed bank

What needs to be taken into account when creating and managing your own seed bank at home or in an allotment. How to carry out the natural selection of seeds, how to conserve them and manage them.
Creating a seed bank is an initiative that reinforces food sovereignty. Recovering seeds is an act of empowerment, in order to stop depending on agro-industrial lobbies.
A seed bank helps to recover traditional seeds and increase the biodiversity which is being lost year after year. This is an educational activity to highlight the great work being done by farmers and how this contributes to a healthy, sustainable diet in our homes.

    Dinar silvestre amb viatge gastronòmic
Culinary experience: wild lunch and culinary journey

A guided meal to discover how cooking based on local produce and edible wild plants is good, fun and also essential. We explain the story behind each of these dishes, how they were made, the characteristics of their ingredients, how the species used were traditionally employed, and their potential in the kitchen (and the countryside) today.

The wild plants are the stars of each dish. We begin by explaining the plants hidden in the wild-plant salad with pine syrup, followed by a tasting session of savoury coca cakes using vegetables of traditional agricultural varieties (pumpkins, spinach, onions, etc.), wild plants (purslane, white goosefoot, sow thistles, etc.) and locally-produced cheese. We will end with a tasting session of sweet coca cakes (carob brownie with wood calamint, almond cake with satureja and apple crumble with lemon verbena), accompanied by a home-made ratafia wine or elder and blackberry syrup for the younger participants.

The meal is suitable for vegetarians.

    Transhumance

Transhumance is the seasonal migration of herds in search of pasture land wherever it may be depending on the time of year: pasture land in the mountains in summer and on the plain in winter.

And so are our shepherds, they lead the flock where the public is gathered to enjoy the street theatre. Shepherds, goats and our dog are the main characters. But maybe you will also end up being a protagonist. Do you know how to milk? And how do you do as a wolf?

    Horta
    Horta (vegetable garden)

Horta is a show that recuperates values rooted in the earth and the most genuine ancestral customs, bringing them up to date and adapting them to the interests and knowledge of younger children. An itinerant journey through various transformed theatrical spaces in Horta, where the senses and the children are the protagonists: touching the earth, listening to and singing songs, discovering stories and old objects and smelling herbs.

Joana and Esther, the two stars of this story, have everything ready: this is the time to wake the earth up and start the cycle, as they were shown by their granddad Vicent and their grandma Maria.
An experience that combines the power of oral narration with the magic and poetry of theatrical and performance resources. Through our senses, we discover what Horta is, with tenderness and emotion, but above all, with humour, entertainment and education.

The countryside is part of our tradition and our future and... Who knows, the children in the audience today may become the great agronomists of the future!

Experiència gastronòmica: menú degustació amb aliments ecològics i de temporada i proximitat
Culinary experience: a tasting menu with ecological, local and seasonal food

Would you like to taste a menu put together by healthy, sustainable groups? Let yourself be seduced by their culinary proposals. Come, taste, and become part of the change.

When designing the menu, we took the following into account:

    • The Mediterranean diet as the basis for the project: seasonal vegetables, legumes and fish.
    • The food offered to us by the producers of local, seasonal ecological produce.
    • The dishes have been designed with culinary combinations, in order to enjoy the territory's food, produced using healthy culinary techniques.

The menu is cooked by eighteen chefs who belong to the network; we are from Catalonia, Valencia, Aragon, Madrid, the Balearic Islands, the Canary Islands and Galicia.
We serve the menu accompanied by the producers who supplied the vegetables, legumes, oil, wine and fish. We will also be accompanied by a manager of short-circuit marketing, a nutritionist and an educator; we would like you to meet all of the people who make the change of model possible in our groups, a strategic sector for furthering this change in the food model.

    Menu

    • Cream of sweet potato with hen-of-the-wood mushrooms
    • Raw vegetable salad with pomegranate and orange vinaigrette
    • Chickpea hamburger with spinach and young garlic sauce
    • Beetroot pie with carob sauce

XVII Festival de Sopes del Món Mundial
XVII International Soups of the World Festival

Since 2004, after learning about the experience of the Lille Soup Festival (France), 9 Barris Acull and the Knowledge-Exchange Network have been organising the International Soups of the World Festival with the aim of improving life and relationships amongst neighbours.
Why have a soup festival? Most importantly, it is a reason to get together, and also because soup is a symbol of something mixed together, yet also very different; something very unique, yet quite universal. All soups share some basic elements (the fire, water, pot, etc.), and from here, the diversity is almost infinite: vegetables, meat, spices...and all the other ingredients that each village and each family has on hand. Therefore, soups are essentially all the same, but at the same time, all unique; all different but all alike, just like people.
The festival is a good excuse to get together: the neighbours have the opportunity to gather in the streets and share culinary traditions from all over. There is nothing better than the warmth of a soup to break the ice and leave aside prejudice and stereotypes, and give us the opportunity to get to know one another and start new things together, so that the current simmer of our neighbourhood translates into a better way of living for everyone.
