El kusudama és una tècnica que prové del Japó i que existeix des de fa centenars d'anys com a art popular. Està inspirada en l'origami, amb la diferència que en comptes d'utilitzar-se un sol full de paper per doblegar s'utilitzen diversos fulls per crear una única figura de kusudama. Aquesta figura està unida només amb papiroflèxia i, per tant, no tenen cap element que enganxi les parts, com ara una cola.
