Improvements to transport and public space this summer

Forty projects will affect public space, including the start of important stages of work on the FGC L8 and the metro L9, plus work to cover a new section of the Ronda de Dalt and the transformations of C/ Balmes and Av. Meridiana.

The work to be carried out in public space has been coordinated and planned by the new Commission for Works and Mobility to minimise the effects and inconvenience it might cause. The estimated investment for this summer is 30.2 million euros.

Works being finalised this summer include the traffic calming of the Jardinets de Gràcia, the revamp of the Via Laietana and the urbanisation of the area above the Túnel de Glòries, between the new square and C/ Bilbao. The coming weeks should also see the completion of the bus lane on the B-23 and the work on the Districlima centre in Poblenou.

Enlargement of the public transport network

The work to extend the L8 between Pl. Espanya and Gràcia, and the construction of the L9 being carried out by the Government of Catalonia, move into important stages this summer. On the one hand, work gets under way on the Manuel Girona station for the L9/L10, and on the other, work on the emergency exit for the L8 in C/ Muntaner.

Construction work on the future Manuel Girona station on the L9/L10 will mean disruptions to circulation. Both lanes on the side nearest the Besòs in C/ Doctor Ferran will be out of operation from 29 June to 3 August, and from 4 August until the completion of the work, the whole road surface and the pavement on the side nearest the Llobregat will be occupied.

This is a strategic action for the public transport network. Once it is completed, the L9 and L10 lines are expected to handle 113 million passengers. The work entails an investment of more than 900 million euros.

Emergency exits on the L8

The work to extend the FGC L8 from Pl. Espanya to Gràcia will mean new mobility disruptions in C/ Muntaner from August. The section between the streets of Laforja and Marià Cubí will be closed to traffic for 13 months, starting from 10 August, allowing the emergency exits for the future tunnel to be built. This disruption will be extended as far as C/ Avenir from December.

In an effort to reduce inconvenience, as from 27 July, the direction of traffic circulation will be changed in C/ Amigó, between Via Augusta and Travessera de Gràcia. From 8 August, the capacity of Via Augusta will also be increased as far as C/ Balmes, with two lanes in each direction.

There will also be a partial closure on the L4, with six kilometres of track to be renewed in a section where it has come to the end of its useful life.

New stage in covering the Ronda de Dalt

Work continues this summer on the transformation and reurbanisation of public space, with a new stage of the work to cover the Ronda de Dalt, started last summer in the section between Av. Vallcarca and the IES Vall d’Hebron. This next section will extend the part already covered, making a total of 540 metres of road covered here.

Two traffic lanes in each direction will need to be closed for this work between 14 July and 4 September. As usual, complete closures are planned at night during the implementation and withdrawal of the work, during the whole period.

Improvements to public space

Specific actions are also planned at other points around the city over the coming weeks. These include the change in circulation in La Rambla and the use of a lane for work in C/ Balmes between the end of July and early August.

Elsewhere, the improvement to Av. Meridiana makes the most of the months with the lowest levels of mobility to occupy one of the three lanes in each direction between C/ Felip II and C/ Fabra i Puig, and at the work on the services ring in Vallcarca, tasks will be transferred to the junction between the streets of Farigola and Mare de Déu del Coll.

Pla Endreça: surfacing and repair of public space

The Pla Endreça is taking advantage of the hottest months for surfacing work that will help maintain road safety and road surfaces. This year brings a total of seven major surfacing projects, improving an area of nearly 37,000 square metres.

Work will be carried out in C/ Pi I Margall, Gran Via de Carles III, Via Augusta, Pg. Mare de Déu del Coll, C/ Ciutat d’Asunción, C/ Pont del Treball Digne and Pg. Vall d’Hebron. These last six come as part of the Comprehensive Maintenance Plan.

Various measures are also planned during the summer to ensure the quality of urban utilities, with major repairs to primary networks for safe water and improvements to lighting.
