According to the Analysis of food waste in Catalan households in 2024, an average of 21.56 kg of food per inhabitant per year currently goes to waste in Catalonia, with an overall environmental impact of 462,347,277 kilogrammes of carbon dioxide.

Prevention activities

Public awareness is one of the areas for prevention in the campaign. Over the weekend of La Mercè, from 26 to 28 September, and as part of the Terra i Gust programme, the Parc de la Ciutadella is hosting two activities for the campaign in collaboration with the Joint Office for Sustainable Food (OCAS) and Barcelona City Council.

The cook Pep Nogué will be offering his section “La Fonda”, from the Catalunya Ràdio show El suplement, live from the Terra i Gust fair on Saturday 27, from 12.30 pm to 1 pm. Two leading figures from the sphere of gastronomy and food waste will be taking part as guests.

And throughout the weekend there will also be recreational activities for families and children at the games and workshops space. Board games, gymkhanas, theatre performances and tastings to learn to recycle and reuse food as much as possible!

Beyond Terra i Gust

The Palau Robert is the scene for an event on 10 October for organisations in Barcelona taking part in the food waste workgroup as part of the Barcelona Healthy and Sustainable Food Strategy 2030. Organisations from outside Barcelona working in this sphere have also been invited on the occasion of the presentation of the guide on food loss and waste for organisations of the Government of Catalonia.
