Support to creation

Support to creation

By getting involved in the production of shows, promoting new creations, and opening doors for young artists. This is how the Barcelona Grec Festival supports creators in the city and beyond.

More than just a platform for showcasing performances, the Barcelona Grec Festival is a driving force in direct contact with the city’s artists and cultural stakeholders. It plays a key role in Barcelona’s creative scene in several ways:

Co-productions

The Barcelona Grec Festival is a showcase for the performing arts that brings major international productions to local audiences while also promoting and giving visibility to talent from Barcelona and across Catalonia. With this goal in mind, the Grec gets involved in the production of large and small shows alike, often in conjunction with other Catalan, Spanish or European festivals.

Likewise, the Barcelona Grec Festival also produces or co-produces live arts shows written by and featuring talents from Barcelona and Catalonia. It takes charge of promoting emerging talents in theatre, circus, music and dance, in addition to supporting mid-career artists and, ultimately, serving as a huge showcase of local talent.

Creation and museums

Yet another year, Barcelona’s creation factories and museums are featuring in a joint experience. A series of museum and heritage spaces in the city are turning into the backdrop for the residents at the city’s artistic creation centres, who engage in dialogue with the art, history or ethnographic collections in each space via their artistic projects.

In this edition, the Centre de les Arts Lliures—Joan Brossa Foundation and the Museu de la Música de Barcelona, with Rubén Ramos Nogueira; La Escocesa and the Fabra i Coats Contemporary Art Centre, with Elena Maravillas; Fabra i Coats: Fàbrica de Creació and the MUHBA Oliva Artés, with Luis Tabuenca; El Graner, centre for creation, and the Picasso Museum, with Lorena Nogal; and Teatre Tantarantana and the Disseny Hub–Museu del Disseny, with the Pagans Company.

On El Teatre Batega [where theatre comes to life]—El Batec del Grec

The city’s local theatres have created a platform to jointly manage the projects they are presenting collaboratively as part of the Barcelona Grec Festival programming.

The collaboration between these local venues and the Barcelona Grec Festival began in 2020 and, to date, has produced initiatives such as a series of staged readings selected from submissions received through a public call. One of last year’s staged readings returns this year as a full theatre production, showcasing emerging talent within the local scene.

Institut del Teatre Awards

The Institut del Teatre of Barcelona, together with other city institutions such as the Barcelona Grec Festival, organises annual awards that recognise the work of young creators, performers, and emerging talents in choreography.

The Barcelona Grec Festival partners with the Institut del Teatre by including two awards granted by this educational institution in the festival:

Dance Award

Every year, a jury comprised of dance and performing arts professionals, professional choreographers and members of the Institut del Teatre reward the efforts of young choreographers and the performers that bring their dances to the stage in an effort to foster the professionalisation of their talent. The winning project in each edition receives a monetary award for the production, in addition to the possibility of displaying the choreography in a professional setting, like the Grec Festival de Barcelona.

Adrià Gual Award

The Institut del Teatre offers the Adrià Gual Award every year to promote the work of young creators and performers. Each year, the winning proposal receives support for both production and performance, with the aim of promoting the artists’ talent and helping them with job placement. In addition to a financial award, the winners also have the opportunity to present their work at the Grec Festival of Barcelona, provided it aligns with the artistic direction and established criteria.

Quim Masó Award

The actor, director and theatre producer Quim Masó gives his name to an annual award for the most creative and high-quality Catalan-language text-based productions among the submissions received. Since 2019, the award has been organised by the Fundació La Ciutat Invisible, which is dedicated to promoting culture in general and the performing arts in particular.

A jury made up of professionals from the performing arts sector will select from among the proposed stage productions—works that have not yet been performed and that, if awarded, will receive financial support for their production.

The winning stage production of the 2024 edition of the Quim Masó Award is El monstre by Josep Maria Miró, which will be presented in this year’s edition of the festival at Sala Beckett.
