The winning production of the 2024 Institut del Teatre Dance Award combines sound, light, movement and gesture in a performance that is as beautiful as it is unsettling, exploring our ways of being in the world.

Dante's Inferno, from which the show takes its title, serves as the symbolic, kinetic and acoustic referent for the creator of this contemporary dance production. Centred on the body and its physical and expressive possibilities, the work adds new layers of meaning by integrating sound and lighting as expressive resources. Western artistic imagery unfolds before us alongside an exploration of the poetic possibilities of pathos and the non-human. This play’s three acts allude to the stages and evolution of life, from primordial ecosystems to a devastated world, perhaps the very Inferno Dante spoke of, now reinterpreted by Gisela Riba.

The Institut del Teatre Dance Award promotes the work of young creators and performers who have graduated from the Professional Dance Conservatory (CPD), the Higher Dance Conservatory (CSD) and IT Dansa (the Institut del Teatre’s young dance company) by offering them financial support to produce and put on the winning piece, in collaboration with the Barcelona Grec Festival. This year’s award was granted to choreographer, performer and teacher Gisela Riba. As a performer, she has worked with Ballet Junior Genève (Switzerland), Ballet Biarritz (France), La Fura dels Baus and choreographers Beate Vollack and Idoia Zabaleta. Her choreographic works have been showcased at festivals such as Quinzena Metropolitana de Dansa de Barcelona, Festival Internacional de Danza y Artes Escénicas-Ciudad de Alcobendas (Madrid), Figueres es mou, Vila-real en Dansa and Quinzena de Dança de Almada-International Dance Festival (Lisbon), among others. In 2024, she received the DanceWEB grant for the ImpulsTanz Festival in Vienna.

Audiences should note that strobe lighting effects will be used at one point in the show.
