Do you have a dream that you put on hold? The latest work from a prolific playwright may serve as a cautionary tale. A familiar actor brings it to the stage, this time taking on the role of director.
On a scorching summer night in a village in rural Catalonia, an immigrant prostitute working the motorway witnesses a fatal accident after a party at a politician’s house. That same night, Ruby, an eighteen-year-old trap singer will get in trouble with the law due to the lyrics of one of her songs. Meanwhile, her father, Pere, a man in his fifties who once dreamed of becoming a rock star, is diagnosed with a terminal illness. He comes to the painful realisation that he has wasted his life, that despite wanting to be everything, he’s a nobody, that he has always been too afraid and never dared to live out his dream of travelling Route 66 to the Grand Canyon. But with the limited time he has left, he understands that even the smallest actions can move mountains and that he can still try to do everything he hasn’t done, and do it right. And pave the way for those who come after him. And fulfil his dream. And begin the journey to the Grand Canyon, the final stop on his life’s path.
Playwright, director, and screenwriter Sergi Pompermayer made his debut as a playwright with Zowie (1997), followed by El sexe dels objectes [The Sex of Objects], Refugiats [Refugees[, Un pare emprenyat [An Angry Father], Top Model, Ghost Light (with Julio Manrique), Oddi, New Order, Sacrifici [Sacrifice], Blues, La comedia de las mentiras [The Comedy of Lies] (with Pep Anton Gómez based on Plautus’ texts), Bouvetøya, la necessitat d’una illa [Bouvetøya, the Need for an Island] and, in 2022, the critical and commercial hit Amèrica, which now has a sequel in Grand Canyon. The many works he has adapted include Mathias Enard’s novel Carrer Robadors [Robadors Street], with Marc Artigau and Julio Manrique, for the 2021 Barcelona Grec Festival (Max Award for Best Adaptation), Michela Murgia’s Instruccions per fer-se feixista [Instructions for Becoming a Fascist] (Grec 2023), and Molière’s The Misanthrope (Grec 2024). The play is directed by actor Pere Arquillué, who previously directed (and also acted in) the production of Un déu salvatge [God of Carnage] earlier this year.
