Two acclaimed dancers explore the paths of Spanish dance and flamenco, from a contemporary perspective. Their starting point is negation, questioning and absence because, they say, art emerges from the negation of the real world.

Irene Tena and Albert Hernández, the two members of La Venidera, were principal dancers and soloists with the Ballet Nacional de España. But these two leading figures on the dance scene wanted to go beyond their work with the company in order to expand the boundaries of flamenco and Spanish dance. And that’s what they do in No, presenting us with a negative world, a universe of absences, of shortcomings, of voids, a negation of reality that opens up the door to art. Their exploration of the frictions between tradition and today’s world opens up a new perspective on the language of Spanish dance. Guiding them as an artistic consultant is Marcos Morau, a leading figure in contemporary dance who directs La Veronal company.

Tena and Hernández consider La Venidera a laboratory for dance and the transmission of a contemporary culture deeply linked to roots. Their approach to dance has led to creations such as Loca [Madwoman] and Paseantes [Pedestrians], among other choreographies. They’re also the choreographers and performers in a documentary about Antonia Mercé (known as “La Argentina”) with the Juan March Foundation.
