Ligia Lewis
A plot / A scandal
An artist who challenges the most conventional visions of the body is now making her debut on Catalan and Spanish stages with a surprising and mysterious exploration of what is seen... and what is not.
You all know what a scandal is, but perhaps you have never thought about how what we consider “scandalous” reveals our dreams and desires and where our society places its limits. Immoral and lacking propriety, scandals are incidents where fantasy and pleasure take centre stage. Weaving together a series of historical events and mythical narratives, including John Locke’s treatise on white man’s “natural rights” to life, liberty, and property; an anti-slavery rebellion, and Lewis’s own great-grandmother, this show explores the seen and unseen.
Ligia Lewis is an artist, choreographer, and director who creates works for the stage, as well as exhibitions and films. High-intensity physical and emotional elements, a mix of comedy and tragedy, and the challenge to conventional visions of the body are some of her hallmarks, and history, memory, and the unknown are some of the themes she addresses, in spaces that are always familiar but enigmatic.
In addition to A Plot / A Scandal (2022), Lewis created Still Not Still (2021) and Deader than dead (2020). A retrospective of her stage works, Complaint, A Lyric, was presented at HAU Hebbel am Ufer in Berlin in 2023. She has performed on several stages, including MOCA, Los Angeles; HAU Hebbel am Ufer, Berlin; MCA Chicago; Tate Modern, London; and at the Whitney Biennial. A Plot / A Scandal, won her the Der FAUST German Theatre Award in 2023.
