ÒH!PERA

Do you want to experience the thrill of a première? Don’t miss these three special evenings, when you will discover three newly created micro-operas each night.
The Gran Teatre del Liceu, in collaboration with the Barcelona City Council’s Culture and Creative Industries Councillor’s Office, has launched ÒH!PERA via the Disseny Hub Barcelona and different design schools in the city. This is an initiative to encourage experimentation and learning among young students from different design disciplines through the real-world experience of creating an opera. Last year, the Grec Festival hosted this project’s first showcase. Now, it is back with a full presentation of three small-scale operas in a single evening.
As you explore different spaces within the Gran Teatre de la Rambla, you will witness the first performances of three new short-form operas by extraordinarily talented emerging composers from the city. The librettos have been crafted by playwrights whose names may already be familiar from theatre programmes, while the composers take on the challenge of writing music for opera or musical theatre, often for the first time. Additionally, many design and applied arts students from Barcelona’s schools have contributed ideas and creative work to bring these brand-new operas to life. All of this is under the direction of young theatre directors from the city, each bringing their own unique vision.
The project director of OH!PERA is Àlex Ollé, founder of La Fura dels Baus and resident artist at the Liceu. He is a renowned stage director with a career spanning over 35 opera productions. Some of his recent works include his direction of the Liceu’s current season opener, Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk by Dmitri Shostakovich (2024), as well as Il trovatore by Giuseppe Verdi (2024), Rusalka by Antonín Dvořák (2023), and L’amore dei tre re by Italo Montemezzi (2023). Ollé has a long-standing connection with the Barcelona Grec Festival, where he previously presented Metamorphosis (2006), a collaboration with Javier Daulte, and First Love by Samuel Beckett, co-directed with Miquel Górriz (2010).
