Com un somni d’una nit d’estiu [Like a Midsummer Night’s Dream]
El Petit de Cal Eril, Rita Payés, Roger Mas, La Ludwig Band... A dozen artists gather in a large intergenerational show to celebrate the 55th anniversary of the release of an iconic album in the history of Catalan-language rock.
Pau Riba’s distinctive set of sounds is familiar to many of those who grew up in the late 20th century listening to Taxista, L’home estàtic and Noia de porcel·lana, but also to many young musicians, influenced by a maestro who forever changed music in Catalonia. All of the above are songs from Dioptria, a double album (or perhaps a LSD goody bag for 1970s ears) that starts with Kithou, describing a girl with this name dancing on the beach while “Nosaltres miràvem sense fer brogit / Era com un somni d’una nit d’estiu” [We watched without making a sound / Like in a midsummer night’s dream]. And bringing this “midsummer night’s dream” to life is the goal of Pau Riba: Dioptria, 55, an intergenerational show in which twelve contemporary and veteran musicians re-examine, re-interpret and re-create each and every one of the songs on Dioptria. The show unfolds in a setting that harks back to 1970s Formentera, an island that played a key role in the artist’s growth during the transition period between the first and second parts of Dioptria, and is also home to the house in La Mola that gave birth to the equally legendary album Jo, la donya i el gripau. Caïm Riba, Pau Riba’s son and a musician himself, is directly involved in this emotional journey through the first years of the elder Riba’s career. Accompanied by the indispensable De Mortimers, a diverse group of musicians who owe a great deal to this deeply admired musician will re-live the legendary double album in a summer night that truly does promise to be a dream come true.
