The Low-Code Revolution: programming available to almost everyone
The report published in the framework of the Barcelona Digital Talent alliance advocates this technology that minimises manual coding and helps solve the shortage of professionals with digital profiles.

The Mobile World Capital Barcelona Foundation and the IT service provider in 50 countries NTT Data have been the driving force behind the report Low-Code Analysis. The aim is to show the impact that this technology will have on society and how in the long run it can help mitigate one of the biggest technological challenges today: the lack of digital talents.
Low-Code technologies are those that minimise or eliminate the manual coding required to develop and deploy software applications. These not only reduce investment in time and cost, but also facilitate access to digitalization for companies and workers with limited training in digital skills.
Low-Code technology makers claim that it allows applications to be developed 10 times faster than traditional technology. In addition, it reduces the cost of apps by 74% and multiplies the productivity of developers by a factor of 9 in a 6-month timeframe. The report confirms that 1 in every 4 new apps are already created with Low-Code.
A new technological paradigm in the field of IT
According to Barcelona Digital Talent, it is expected that in the period between 2018 and 2023, 500 million new applications will need to be created worldwide. This figure exceeds the number of applications generated in the last 40 years.
The report also points out that 55% of companies across the European Union have or have had difficulty hiring professionals in the ICT sector. In fact, according to the document, an estimated 350,000 digital specialists are needed in Europe.
In this regard, the Low-Code becomes the necessary solution to the high technological demand and the scarcity of professionals with digital profiles and brings companies closer to digitalization, a lever of competitiveness that is well-nigh essential in the context of the fourth industrial revolution.
