Liraz —a singer-songwriter who fuses modern Israeli music with the ethnic flavour of her Persian roots— presents Mercè Roya, a disc secretly recorded in Istanbul with her Tel Aviv band and Iranian musicians who defied the severity of Tehran's regime. A magical portal that leads us to a place of peace, joy and freedom.
Roya (fantasy, in Farsi) is the sum of present and past, of modern and traditional rhythms. It's dream and mystery. Hymns, love ballads, sparkling Middle Eastern dance tunes... A collection of songs performed by Liraz accompanied by her group (three women, three men), but also by the violin, the viola and the Iranian llaüt of anonymous, furtive musicians who did not hesitate to travel from Teheran to Istanbul in secret to work with her. Clandestine collaborations that began in the shadows, but emerged from the loudspeakers in a mix of traditional Persian instruments, along with club rhythms and call-to-action melodies. Music that breaks downs walls.
Electro-pop, electro-dance, retro pop... these are just some of the labels that unsuccessfully attempt to pigeonhole the music of an unclassifiable artist.
