Cycle lane use in the city up 17%
According to data on cycle lane usage, between June 2024 and June this year, Avinguda Diagonal has become the city’s main cycling corridor, particularly the stretch between Plaça Francesc Macià and Plaça Glòries. The figures are collected using electromagnetic sensors embedded in the road surface, which count all vehicles passing along the cycle lanes.
Eight of the ten busiest points for bicycles and personal mobility vehicles (PMVs) are located where Avinguda Diagonal meets Passeig de Gràcia. The busiest and third-busiest points are on Diagonal itself, in the Besòs-bound and Llobregat-bound directions, with more than 6,000 and 5,000 daily journeys recorded, respectively.
In line with the aim of strengthening this corridor, one of the key projects planned for the current term is to move the Diagonal cycle lane down to road level between Glòries and the Fòrum. At present, it runs along the raised central promenade of the avenue. The goal is to complete the upgrade of this 4.6-kilometre section before the end of the mandate.
Over the coming years, work is also planned on more than 20 kilometres of infrastructure, linking existing cycle corridors with new stretches of lane and improving safety and efficiency. These will add to the 22 kilometres already completed to date.
