Every year, millions walk under Guastavino’s Catalan vaults in historical spaces across the United States, from the Registry Room on Ellis Island (1917) to the Biltmore Estate in the North Carolina mountains (1895), from the Nebraska State Capitol (1932) by Bertram Goodhue (1869–1924) in Lincoln to the campus buildings of Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh (1912), designed by Henry Hornbostel (1867-1961). Still, there are few visitors who truly appreciate the contribution made to North American architecture by the Guastavino family from Valencia or the conditions that led Guastavino’s Catalan vaulting to become one of the structural systems of choice for decades afterwards.
