The true stories of thirty Mexican journalists who, under threat—often of death—have been forced to leave their homeland and seek refuge in a municipal programme in Barcelona. A journalistic chronicle full of harrowing episodes, yet threaded with the hope made possible by the city’s embrace.
Keeping the Story Alive (original Spanish title: Seguir contándolo) tells the tale of a group of people in Barcelona who, ten years ago and driven by their belief in solidarity, launched a project offering Mexican journalists a few months’ respite from the spiral of violence surrounding them.
What began as a grassroots initiative soon became an official programme of Barcelona City Council, managed by the Taula per Mèxic association and inspired by that same spirit of internationalism and intergovernmental reciprocity.
The book explores the experiences of more than thirty participants—people we deeply admire—who belong to different networks, collectives and journalists’ associations in Mexico. Together, they embody a remarkable and transformative movement that shows the power of journalism and solidarity in building alternative futures.
Mexico is one of the most perilous countries in the world for journalists, and yet thousands persist in their work across the nation, keeping the story alive.
The prologue is written by the Mexican author Cristina Rivera Garza, winner of the Pulitzer Prize.
What are them saying
