Located inside one of the Eixample’s residential blocks, the head office of the publishers Editorial Gustavo Gili was built between 1954 and 1960, and awarded the FAD Prize for Architecture in 1961. It is a sober building, with pure lines and polygonal bodies, and one of the best example of 1950s Rationalist architecture in Barcelona.

Yearning for progress

The daring of the client, Gustavo Gili, and the know-how of the architects, Joaquim Gili and Francesc Bassó, combined to produce a pioneering building at a difficult time for progressive ideas in Spain: the head office of the publishing house Editorial Gustavo Gili, founded in Barcelona in 1902. It was a call for modern architecture to be adopted as a movement befitting the contemporary era.

In search of contemporary architecture

The Editorial Gustavo Gili head office reflects the main ideas of Rationalist architecture: the use of new materials, elimination of superfluous decoration, submission of form to function, consistency with the surroundings and making use of natural light. The architects had been trained in the theories of GATCPAC, a group of progressive Catalan architects, and they were enthusiastic supporters of the new architecture as opposed to out-of-date classicism.

En una època difícil per a les idees progressistes a Espanya, la valentia del client, Gustavo Gili, i el saber fer dels arquitectes Joaquim Gili i Francesc Bassó van donar com a resultat un edifici pioner: l'Editorial Gustavo Gili, fundada a Barcelona l'any 1902. Es reivindicava, així, l'adopció de l'arquitectura moderna com a moviment propi de l'era contemporània.

A la recerca de l'arquitectura contemporània

La seu de l'Editorial Gustavo Gili segueix les doctrines principals de l'arquitectura racionalista: ús dels nous materials, supressió de decoració supèrflua, supeditació de les formes a la funció, coherència amb l'entorn i aprofitament de la llum natural. Els arquitectes s'havien format amb les teories del GATCPAC (Grup d'Artistes i Tècnics Catalans per al Progrés de l'Arquitectura Contemporània) i eren ferms defensors de la nova arquitectura davant classicismes obsolets.
