Church of Sant Genís dels Agudells

C Saldes, 3

The church of Sant Genís dels Agudells came under the wing of the monastery of Sant Jeroni de la Vall d’Hebron in the 14TH century and the parish of Sant Joan d’Horta long after, in the 19TH CENTURY. There is still a cemetery next to the church, the only one remaining in the city’s urban centre outside the City Council’s jurisdiction.

A mediaeval complex

The Sant Genís dels Agudells complex is made up of a church, rectory and parish cemetery, where Manuel Carrasco i Formiguera is buried, and the 13TH-CENTURY farmhouse of Can Safont. The church has a single nave with a transept, chapels and a lintelled door. A fire damaged the parish church, burning a good part of its interior, at the outbreak of the Civil War in 1936. Its characteristic bell tower dates from the 17th century. The  Can Safont farmhouse has been rebuilt many times, however, and has lost its original appearance. In contrast, the rectory still maintains the worked stone on the windows and door, along with a semicircular arch. The facade of the church preserves a sculptured Gothic cross.

A cemetery in use

Boasting some thousand niches, the cemetery still holds burials. Only two cemeteries remain in Barcelona that are not municipally owned: this is one of them and the other is the Vallvidrera.
