Sport and Dansa Ara

’'Esport i Dansa Ara. Joan Serra' is the sports education programme with the greatest participation among schools in Barcelona. Children spend months working on different contemporary dances and breakdance, a new Olympic discipline, to acquire the knowledge and rhythmic movement and expression corresponding to their educational age in a dynamic and fun way.

Children have been working with their PE and music teachers, who helped to transmit the idea of union between the body, rhythm and dance.

In order not to saturate the Palau Sant Jordi and enable as many people as possible to attend, two sessions were organised: one at 9.15 am and the other at 11.15 am. The programme was the same for both sessions.

Firstly, a parade with standards opened the activity to the rhythm of One Step Beyond, by Madness. After the institutional presentation and before the pupils’ big moment, third-year students from the Conservatori Professional de Dansa de l’Institut del Teatre danced Després de l’alegria. Next came the Companyia Factoria Mascaró, who performed their take on breakdancing with Petar-ho by Oques Grasses, in the company of the children.

Finally it was the children’s turn, performing Il Tamburo & la Ritirata Maestroso by Boccherini; Hawaiian Lollipop by The Waikikis; 500 milles by The Proclaimers; Poltsa Berri by Quico Pugès; Jungle Blues by Pepet i Marieta; Gran Valse by Francisco Tàrrega and Eso que tú me das by Pau Donés, as the grand finale.

The event was attended by over 10,000 spectators in all, with family members, teaching staff, school management and representatives from the Government of Catalonia.
