“Rodoreda, una autora europea. Trànsits, lectures i obra” [Rodoreda, a European author. Transits, readings and work]

Centre de Cultura Contemporània de Barcelona - Sala Mirador

Literature. A conference by Mercè Ibarz as part of the CCCB exhibition '”Rodoreda, a forest”.

At this conference, Mercè Ibarz, narrator, cultural critic and essayist, draws a map of readings of time in the vital and literary transitions of Mercè Rodoreda and proposes reading her work as a unique contribution to European literature.

Reading Rodoreda in exclusively in a Catalan context would be to limit her and her work, and would be to limit ourselves as readers. Rodoreda is not "universal" only because of the translations that continuously extend her work. She is a European author in the world in her own right, she would be so even if she had not been translated.

Rodoreda's work is a contribution, one more, and a unique one, that demands to be read as a European and universal work of the second half of the 20th century, the century of excesses (although the 21st century is doing everything it can to outdo it) and it speaks to us and warns us about these excesses.
