'Blackface i altres vergonyes’ [Blackface and other disgraces]

Cooperativa Periferia Cimarronas

From 17/12/2025 to 02/01/2026

Theatre. An anti-racist and feminist look at black feminism.

Synopsis

The term Blackface in English is used to refer to white people who paint their faces black, as a caricature of the black population. The practice, contrary to popular belief, did not originate with nineteenth-century American minstrels (troubadours). Spanish Golden Age theatre featured black characters as a source of humour.

In this show, Silvia Albert Sopale offers her critical take on the "official history" of the Afro-descendant community in Spain. Starting with celebrations and events considered racist, the creator looks to question them and highlight how they impact society’s cultural imagination.

Through various characters and situations, viewers can get closer to the emotions and feelings of a community that is silenced and still ridiculed in what is considered a "disgraceful" practice in the 21st century.
