Billy's Violence / Billy's Joy (Double bill)

Needcompany

Teatre Lliure Montjuïc - Sala Fabià Puigserver   30/06

One show, which premièred at the Grec in 2021, explored the passions and more violent side of Shakespeare’s plays, while a more recent second show examined his comedies. Now they are both being performed together.

Many of the pieces that Shakespeare wrote are extraordinarily brutal. The Belgian director Jan Lauwers, one of the prominent names in European theatre today, has already staged many Shakespeare plays. This makes him a good guide on the journey through the darkest corners of Shakespeare’s work that his son, the poet Victor Afung Lauwers, proposes in Billy’s Violence. Is Shakespeare a kind of late-16th and early-17th-century Tarantino? We will find our answer from the members of Needcompany, the multidisciplinary, multicultural and innovative theatre company set up in 1986, along with their local accomplices Nao Albet, Gonzalo Cunill and Juan Navarro.

They are in the cast of Billy’s Joy, a comedy inspired by A Midsummer Night’s Dream but set in a place where nothing is what it seems. The text is very relevant today, parodying or reflecting Shakespearean characters that speak directly to younger audiences, Gen-Zers or Millennials, who are trying to carve out their own space in a Boomer world.

Billy’s Violence will also be performed separately on 28 June and Billy’s Joy on 29 June
