Carmen Martín Gaite / María Folguera
This text that spans sleep and wakefulness, the dream world and raw reality, is being brought to the stage to mark the centenary of the author’s birth.
A woman at night. A house and an unexpected visitor. The woman, a writer, was preparing to spend the night alone, but a mysterious man arrives with forgotten questions. What was in the back room? This is a journey through light and memory, fear of the dark, and the quest for meaning. A bold exploration of the past, full of secrets, and the words that sometimes have the power to save us. Who is the man in black? Where is the island of Bergai hidden? Martín Gaite brings fantasy into an ordinary Madrid flat on an ordinary night. But that night will be pivotal, leading to the creation of a magical manuscript.
Author María Folguera brings to the stage this 1978 novel by renowned author, essayist, thinker, and translator Carmen Martín Gaite, considered one of the leading voices in 20th-century Spanish literature, whose centenary is being celebrated this year.In this work, Martín Gaite is both the author and a character, creating a mystery that doubles as a reflection on the creative process. The play is brought to life by actress Emma Suárez, alongside Alberto Iglesias and Nora Hernández, and is directed by Rakel Camacho, a director with a passion for both classical works and avant-garde theatre. Her recent productions include Que mujer prodigio soy [Prodigy Woman] by Juana Escabias in 2022, which premiered at the Ibero-American Classical Theatre Festival in Alcalá de Henares and the International Classical Theatre Festival in Almagro, as well as Quiero colapsar a tu lado [I Want to Collapse by Your Side] for La Rueda Teatro Social. She also directed part of the Humanidad. 5 visiones de Goya para circo [Humanity. 5 Visions of Goya for Circus] project, created by Teatro Circo Price and La Grainerie of Toulouse and written by none other than María Folguera. Her latest work is a personal take on Francisco Nieva’s Coronada y el Toro [Coronada and the Bull], which premiered at Las Naves del Español in 2023.
