Naturstudium III: Music for the Baschet Sound Sculptures
Luis Tabuenca and Les Percussions de Strasbourg
Part instrument, part sculpture. That’s what Baschet sound sculptures are. A composer and a percussion quartet present the compositions they have created with these pieces, which synthesise art, science and sound.
World première of Naturstudium III, a project featuring works composed by Luis Tabuenca using some of the original sound sculptures created by the Baschet brothers. The legendary French contemporary music ensemble Les Percussions de Strasbourg performs all the pieces conducted by Luis Tabuenca himself.
These sculptures, part of François Baschet’s legacy to the city of Barcelona, represent a unique synthesis of art, science and sound which Tabuenca explores from a contemporary perspective. The project highlights Barcelona’s musical heritage, showcasing the Baschet sound sculptures while establishing a dialogue with the city’s architectural and industrial heritage. The sculptures will be integrated into the historical and social narrative presented by the museum at the former Oliva Artés metallurgy workshop, now part of MUHBA.
The Oliva Artés factory once produced and repaired machinery and accessories for industries based in Sant Martí and Poblenou. The materials used to construct the Baschet sculptures evoke this industrial past.
Luis Tabuenca is a composer and percussionist. Holding a doctorate from the University of Barcelona, he studied composition and percussion in Zaragoza, Barcelona, Amsterdam and San Diego. His international catalogue of works includes operas, sound installations, video art, contemporary dance, chamber music and solo instrumental pieces.
He founded Ensemble Volavérunt in 2014, was the founder and artistic director of the Festival Internacional de Música Contemporània i Art Sonor (FAT, 2011-2017) and has released over ten albums with labels such as KAIROS and MODE Records.
Les Percussions de Strasbourg is one of the world’s most prestigious percussion ensembles. Founded in 1962 and sponsored by Pierre Boulez, it has premièred over 350 works and collaborated with renowned composers such as Xenakis and Stockhausen.
The creative factories and Barcelona's museums once again lead a shared experience. A series of museum and heritage spaces in the city become a stage for the residents of the city's artistic creation centers, who engage in dialogue through their proposals with the artistic, historical, or ethnographic collections preserved in each space.
Before the show begins, there will be a brief presentation by Martí Ruiz, a sound artist and Doctor of Fine Arts, member of the Sound Art Laboratory, founder and coordinator of the Baschet Sound Sculpture Workshop at UB.
A production by Fabra i Coats: Fàbrica de Creació and the Museu d’Història de Barcelona (MUHBA)
