Premiere in Barcelona

An exploration of Spanish democracy fifty years later, through the eyes of technicians and other behind-the-scenes workers who are typically not seen on stage.

In this production, La Tristura shies away from more familiar perspectives to focus on a pivotal moment in the life of any show: the moment when technicians, workers, and craftsmen bring the dream to life or, in other words, provide it with a physical structure. They are the protagonists of a performance that, at the same time, reflects on iconic moments from the last few years of our democracy. The goal is not so much to judge it, but to become aware of how young it still is, historically speaking. Everything can still be rebuilt or transformed. Everything could be reborn, as the title suggests, in a performance that unfolds amidst sound checks, whispered confessions, and stagehands assembling and disassembling sets. They talk about love and family secrets, reminisce about childhood, and wonder about the need to engage in the regeneration of our world. Because, most likely, tomorrow we will want to get out of bed and, despite everything, start a new day.

Audiences at the Barcelona Grec Festival are well-acquainted with La Tristura, a company that explores the boundaries between reality and fiction, presentation and representation, always with the belief that intimacy and poetry are inherently political. Their works, such as CINE (Grec 2017), Future Lovers (Grec 2019), and Materia prima [Raw Material], have earned them recognition as one of Spain’s most innovative and risk-taking contemporary theatre companies. They see the stage as a space to expose our society’s wounds and shadows, but also as a platform for celebration.

A co-production by Teatros del Canal, Thèâtre de Liège, Noorderzon/Grand Theatre Groningen, Madrid City Council, and La Tristura.

With the support of Prospero.
