Show in Catalan and English
Hip-hop is the vehicle used by choreographer and Just Us Dance Theatre artistic director Joseph Toonga to challenge racial bias and claim identity through movement, sound and bearing witness. This piece, performed by an all-female cast, confronts how Black women’s bodies are misinterpreted, silenced or over-exposed in both public and private spaces. Through powerful visual images, the choreography speaks of both systemic racism and the power, softness and spirit of Black women. The choreography is part of a trilogy that encourages empathy and dialogue.
Joseph Toonga fuses hip-hop and theatre to create powerful performances with social implications. He addresses race, identity and mental health, bringing new narratives to the movement scene.
