Have you ever noticed that when an Asian woman appears in a film, she seldom speaks? Perhaps it’s because her character doesn’t know the language, or because she’s portrayed as mysterious and inscrutable – as the stereotypes would have us believe... This performative monologue condemns the way Western cultural norms have stripped Asian women of their voices. But these women are here. They exist. They are aware of what’s going on around them and – no matter how uncomfortable that may be for some – they do have a voice. To roar. To call. To sing. And to speak.
The piece is accompanied by live music and audiovisuals and features contributions from members of the Asian community. A performance that reclaims the right to cultural participation and celebrates the presence of a community that has too often been made invisible. A stage creation by actress, author and director Sònia Masuda, with the support of Gen Lida (bassist).
