Four natural spaces to be re-greened with ERDF funding
Work on the development and consolidation of greenery is to be carried out in the Parc del Poblenou, Passeig de les Bateries de Montjuïc, the area around the Font del Cuento in the Parc del Guinardó and the Parc del Turó de la Peira. The projects form part of the Climate Plan, which is aimed at promoting a more resilient city before climate change, protecting biodiversity and increasing urban greenery.
The subsidy from the Fundación Biodiversidad, Ministry for Ecological Transition and Demographic Challenge (MITECO), through joint funding with the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF), will allow the Municipal Institute of Parks and Gardens to transform and improve four large green spaces in the city. The funding covers 40% of the overall cost of the work, which has a final budget of roughly 3.3 million euros. The projects will start being rolled out next year and take until 2028.
According to the Nature Plan 2021-2030, work will be carried out in a total area of 45,849 square metres of green space in the central parterres of the Parc del Poblenou; in Passeig de les Bateries and at the Forestier de Montjuïc steps; in the area around the Font del Cuento in the Parc del Guinardó and in part of the Parc del Turó de la Peira.
The re-greening of these spaces includes taking up pavements, improving urban planning, watering, replanting greenery and improving ecological connectivity, biodiversity structures and more. The projects also include accessibility actions and the gender perspective.
All the actions are aimed at the development and consolidation of the city’s green infrastructure and are part of the Climate Plan, driving a more resilient city to climate change, protecting biodiversity and boosting greenery. The projects also aim to get people involved in the design, maintenance and use of parks and gardens. In this respect, citizen participation activities will be carried out and there will be a monitoring plan to assess the results.
Trees and vegetation play a key role in people’s quality of life and in decarbonisation. Good-quality natural parks and gardens with biodiversity help to improve people’s daily lives, with comfortable outdoor spaces.
