Work to improve the groundwater network continues
In May, work on the groundwater network between Can Batlló and the Anella Olímpica on Montjuïc is entering a new phase, with disruption to the La Marina neighbourhoods as well. Work has been underway on Pg. Zona Franca between Carrer de Cisell and Carrer del Foc since 31 March. The installation on the new pipes between Carrer del Foc and Carrer dels Alts Forns will begin on 6 May and last approximately two months.
The new pipe will extend along Passeig de la Zona Franca from the initial stretch of Avinguda del Carrilet and Plaça d’Ildefons Cerdà to Carrer dels Motors in the Marina del Prat Vermell neighbourhood. The network will also be installed on Carrer del Foc as far as Passeig del Migdia to hook up with the other branches criss-crossing Montjuïc.
Project phases and disruptions to mobility
The work on Passeig de la Zona Franca between Carrer del Foc and Carrer dels Alts Forns will start on Tuesday 6 May, when this stretched will be reduced to one lane of traffic in the direction of the mountain, although the bicycle lane will remain open.
At the same time, between 6 and 26 May, construction will also be underway on Passeig de la Zona Franca between Carrer de la Mineria and Plaça d’Ildefons Cerdà. This road will be limited to one lane of traffic, and the bicycle lane will be moved to the pavement, while keeping it separate from the pedestrian area.
The work on the junction of Carrer del Foc and Passeig de la Zona Franca will be done in two stages. On Saturday 10 May, the sea side will be done and the ascending direction on Carrer del Foc from Pg. Zona Franca will be cut off and diverted along Carrer dels Alts Forns, Carrer de la Mare de Déu de Port and Carrer del Foc. On Monday 12 May, work will be done on the mountain side, while keeping one lane open. No work will be done on Sunday to avoid disrupting traffic on the day of the Mercadillo. On 17 and 18 May, work will be done on the junction with Carrer dels Alts Forns.
Different bus lines (23, 109, V3, V5, H16, N1) will be disrupted while construction lasts. Please check the TMB for the bus stops and lines with incidents or diversions.
Guaranteeing irrigation on Montjuïc and the gardens around it
This work is part of the Comprehensive Maintenance Plan of the Pla Endreça and aims to reinforce the groundwater network on Montjuïc by connecting it with the Poble-sec network and the new Can Batlló cistern. This initiative will guarantee sustainable irrigation on Montjuïc mountain and the La Marina gardens.
On the other side of the mountain, the network will also be complemented with the enlargement of the groundwater system and the construction of new cisterns which use drive pipes to carry water up Montjuïc and ensure the irrigation of the green areas around it.
The focus on the use of groundwater for irrigation is particularly important within the current climate emergency, when saving water is more essential than ever.
Work began in the summer of 2024 and should be completed by November 2025.
