Giants’ Dance Display

Giants’ Dance Display

Barcelona's giants and their illustrious guests from Kyiv, who will have spent the night at the City Hall, will be taking to Pl. Sant Jaume for a standing display and starting the giants’ morning, known as the Matí gegant. After the display, and now wide awake thanks to the sound of gralla pipes and trabuc blunderbusses, these monumental figures will start to dance in a display known as the Mostra de Balls de Gegants, with some pairs of giants performing their dances.

Perhaps we’ll see the traditional Ball de Santa Eulàlia, by the Plaça Nova giants; the Havanera by the Barceloneta giants; the popular Marieta de l’ull viu, by the Casc Antic giants’ group, or the Toc de Gràcia, the dance by the giants and mini-giants of Gràcia. The catalogue of dances, historical or newly created, is broad and diverse; an aerial dance precedes the Passada de Nans i Gegants and is the oldest giant activity in the festivities for La Mercè. A parade around the streets of the Gòtic neighbourhood and El Raval for children and adults to enjoy. ( see ‘Parade by Dwarf and Giant figures’).
