calvary
calvary
Changes in aesthetic tastes often led to the replacement and subsequent removal of some images that decorated churches. This calvary from the middle of the 14th century was saved from the changes that were made to the Church of San Pedro de Tejada in Burgos by being placed later on the upper part of the main altarpiece, which is late Gothic.
it is a work of remarkable quality. In the center we find Christ, flanked by Mary and Saint John, the only one of the apostles who accompanied him at the foot of the cross. The three figures have a naturalistic anatomy, with rounded and soft shapes. The face of Christ is serene. The Virgin shows a resigned and sad attitude and St. John holds the book with his left hand, and rests his sad face on it in the other, a gesture that is very common in the representations of the evangelist that we find in medieval ordeals.
On the occasion of its restoration, the original polychromy has been recovered, which has made it possible to better appreciate the details of the faces, the clothing and the cross.
