Frederic Marès' artistic vocation, sculpture, became his passion at the same time. Throughout his life he gathered an extensive sculpture collection hispanic that spans from ancient times to the 19th century, in which religious polychrome carving predominates. This collection occupies the ground and first floors, as well as part of the underground floor of the building.
Marès also donated part of his own sculptural work, which is exhibited in his Study-library .
The Collector's cabinet occupies the second and third floors of the building. It's practically a museum within a museum and allows you to appreciate how far Marès's collecting spirit went. Tens of thousands of pieces document ways of life and customs of the past, mainly from the 19th century, such as fans, pipes, clocks, photographs, toys, keys, pharmacy jars and reliquaries, which are presented in an intimate and evocative atmosphere of the particular universe of Marès.
One of the main objectives of the collections area is to document the sources and forms of entry of the works and their provenances, which illustrate the collector profile of Frederic Marès.
In terms of preventive conservation and restoration, the Museum works to guarantee the preservation of the works and objects that make up its collections for present and future generations.
The collaborative work of the different areas of the Museum makes it possible to deepen the historical and artistic knowledge of the works and, ultimately, to improve their presentation and dissemination to the public.
