FREDERIC MARÈS MUSEUM. Sculpture and collecting
The most outstanding Catalan collector of the 20th century, the sculptor Frederic Marès (1893-1991), donated his collections to the city of Barcelona in 1946. Two years later, this museum was inaugurated located in part of the old Royal Palace of the Counts of Barcelona, in the heart of the Gothic Quarter, whose courtyard or orchard is preserved.
Sculpture
Frederic Marès turned sculpture into something more than an artistic vocation. Throughout his life he assembled an extensive collection of Hispanic sculpture, from ancient times to the 19th century, in which polychrome carving predominates and which constitutes the most homogeneous section of the museum. Marès also donated part of his own sculptural work, which is exhibited in his study-library.
Collector's cabinet
Tens of thousands of objects form a large collection of collections that document ways of life and customs of the past, mainly from the 19th century. You can find endearing and unusual items, such as fans, pipes, clocks, jewellery, photographs, toys, keys, pharmacy jars or reliquaries, which, presented in an intimate atmosphere, evoke the particular universe of Marès.
