The Documentation and Research Center preserves important reference heritage funds around the figure of the sculptor and collector Frederic Marès (1893-1991). It is an area integrated into the Museum that brings together bibliographic, documentary and image collections and aims to continue the work of cataloguing, digitizing and disseminating it to become a point of reference for specialists and the interested public.
Its origins go back to 1988, when Marès donated his own sculptural work and library to the City Council, demonstrating an interest and a desire to leave a public legacy to the City, which is confirmed with the testamentary legacy of 1991, which specifies the donation of numerous documentary materials.
Its holdings contain a large volume of information at the service of research and knowledge of subjects for which the Museum is a benchmark in Catalonia - such as artistic and cultural life and the teaching of fine arts in Barcelona - and also in Spain - such as 20th century art collecting, the world of antiques and the history of Hispanic sculpture.
The Frederic Marès personal fund constitutes the backbone of the center and is what gives it its own uniqueness. It allows the works and heritage objects in the collections to be related to the context and the artistic, social and intellectual moment in which Marès lived.
This context related to Marès includes the funds of personalities from the world of culture, such as the writer and cartoonist Eveli Bulbena and the playwright and journalist Conrad Roure. Equally, the funds of entities such as the Academy of Fine Arts of Sant Jordi, the Royal Academy of Fine Arts of San Fernando or the Cercle Artístic de Sant Lluc.
The Frederic Marès Museum, with seventy years of history, preserves and updates the Museum's collection, which allows us to trace the trajectory and evolution of the institution.
it is essential to arrange prior appointment to access each of the funds/services.
