Christmas carols in Barcelona
Christmas carols in Barcelona
Until a few decades ago, and since the end of the 19th century, Christmas carols were part of everyday life in cities in the last month of the year.
The prints contained on the main side the illustration of the trade (serene, watchman, postman, coalman, lampman, scavenger, etc.), often with motifs alluding to their work and with views and monuments of the city and a phrase congratulating the holidays. On the reverse side was included a text in verse with references to the services provided throughout the year and the request for the will or tip, since the fundamental function of these graphic products was their exchange for an amount of money or for groceries for Christmas meals.
These sixteen crafts carols that are part of a Museum collection of more than four hundred examples from the 20th century, mostly made in chromolithography, some of them illustrated by renowned cartoonists, are a good example of graphic material now extinct and, in some cases, they remind us of vanished crafts.
