Collection of commercial prints
The evolution of industrial society and new printing techniques have been, for many decades, the engines of advertising and have generated thousands of artistic samples on paper.
In some cases the designs of these ephemeral materials were commissioned to prestigious artists, but a large number remain anonymous. In the case of Catalonia, artists such as Eusebi Planas, Apel·les Mestres, Alexandre de Riquer, Ramon Casas and Josep Triadó stand out as good collaborators in the world of advertising from the middle of the 19th century to the beginning of the 20th.
Part of the extensive collection of commercial prints gathered by Frederic Marès, basically cards and labels from Barcelona companies and shops, is exhibited in this room, and some works by the aforementioned artists can be recognised, but above all they are a good example of the rich entrepreneurial fabric of the city and a way of documenting and evoking industries and businesses that have disappeared today.
