Collection of pipes
The large collection of pipes made from sea foam stands out among the almost 300 pipes that the Museum keeps. Sepiolite, in German meerschaum (sea foam), is a soft mineral of which Turkey has the most important deposits. From the 18th century, preferably in central Europe, it was the favorite material of artisans when making artistic pipes.
From the middle of the 19th century until 1925, the highest point of this craft developed, with Vienna and other cities of the Austrian Empire as centers of production of the most exquisite specimens. The subject matter is varied: historical, allegorical, exotic or mythological characters, hunting or everyday scenes and female figures.
These pipes were often passed down from father to son as a valuable heirloom, and the original white color changed to golden tones as they were used. Today, the world of collectors covets the delicate pipes of craftsmen such as Ludwig Hartmann & Eidam from Vienna, Sommer Frères from Paris or Emanuel Czapek from Prague, well represented in this room.
