THE IDEAL BEAUTY. Antoni Solà (1780-1861), sculptor in Rome
Antoni Solà (Barcelona, 1780 - Rome, 1861) was one of the most prestigious artists of his time. Retired in Rome since 1803, he settled there definitively and was one of the only two foreigners to hold the presidency of the Academy of San Luca, the main disseminator of neoclassical art. He intervened in the main Roman cultural affairs, and defended the imitation of the Greeks and the search for ideal beauty, visible in his sculptures, academic speeches and lessons addressed to his disciples. Numerous monuments and works adorn palaces, churches and squares in Rome, Barcelona, Madrid, Havana, Bologna, Mexico...
Buried in the Eternal City, new aesthetic orientations and the passage of time relegated it to oblivion. A century and a half later, this is the first exhibition that wants to do justice to one of the great sculptors of neoclassicism.
